OPPO officially released two new mobile phones; OPPO R17 and OPPO R17 PRO on August 23. After nearly five months of research and development, OPPO has released its latest mid-range smartphone. Is this a smartphone worth buying? Let’s go through the review to find out more.

The OPPO R17 is equipped with a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a 2340*1080px resolution. The OLED COF packaging is used to package the driver IC under the screen onto a flexible circuit board, and the bottom border is narrowed by bending to the other side of the screen. It is worth mentioning that the OPPO R17 is currently the best mid-range mobile phone with the bottom border control using OLED COF packaging technology.

“The beauty in everything” is the product concept pursued by OPPO, so the R17 adopts a full-screen display that is more appealing and beautiful than the notch display. You can see the front design of OPPO R17 in the picture above. The front-facing 25-megapixels only occupies a small portion in the upper screen while the earpiece and the proximity distance sensor are hidden and the whole machine looks more compact.

With a 2.5D glass body, the OPPO R17 mobile phone combines pure blue, fresh green and introverted black fusion through a new layered streamer and coloring process, which finally presents an unpredictable and mysterious blue color. The slanting gradient color outline is more in line with people’s understanding of the aurora color, making the flat glass body more layered.

The OPPO R17 that we used in this review came with Color OS 5.2 (based on Android 8.1) out of the box. Color OS is a heavily customized version of the default Android operating system, which provides customized UI and features to the users.

In addition to further optimizing the performance of the system and improving security, there is a new feature called “Smart Sidebar” in the UI of Color OS 5.2.

The biggest highlight of the smart sidebar is that you call this sidebar in any interface. Whether you are watching a video, browsing a webpage or chatting, you can display this interface by sliding inward at the specified position on the right side of the system. You can quickly take screenshots, record screens, view recent files, reply to chat messages, and perform other tasks with it. You can also add or remove apps in the smart sidebar.

OPPO R17 Performance

Talking about the specifications, OPPO R17 is powered by the Qualcomm’s latest mid-range processor Snapdragon 670. The processor is based on a 10nm process technology, using the same Kryo 360 eight-core architecture as the Snapdragon 710 (two Cortex-A75+ six Cortex-A55, clocked down to 2.0GHz); supplemented by the Adreno 616 GPU. The performance is 35% better than the previous generation Snapdragon 660. The phone is supplemented with 8GB LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 internal storage.

In the one-hour test of the real-time battle MOBA mobile game “Honor of Kings”, the average frame rate and HD quality/high frame rate mode could be maintained in between 59fps~60fps in OPPO R17, and the game ran smoothly. The gaming performance could match to the Android flagship phones.

In the one-hour test of “Jesus Survival: Stimulating the Battlefield”, OPPO R17 could only maintain a maximum frame rate of 40fps in HD quality/high frame rate mode, and the average frame rate is maintained in between 36fps~38FPS. In between, the gaming performance is acceptable.

The OPPO R17 is equipped with a front-facing 25 megapixel AI beauty camera with an aperture value of F/2.0 and a core sensor for the Sony IMX576. OPPO R17 Pricing & Availability

This smartphone has been released in China only and it is priced at around $515. The price to performance ratio seems quite high considering that OPPO R17 has only a Snapdragon 670 SoC while Xiaomi Pocophoe F1 with the latest Snapdragon 845 SoC and flagship specifications is available at just under $400. Regarding its global release, We don’t have any official confirmation.

OPPO R17 is a mobile phone with balanced specifications but even when Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is available under $400, users will find this smartphone expensive. The only thing that can allure the user is its design as we can find better alternatives in this price segment. The picture above shows the portrait taken by the front camera with beauty mode. The overall composition is accurate, but the blurring effect is not accurate. Some part of the hair is blurred too much giving an artificial look to the photo.

In a well-lit environment, the images taken by the Huawei Nova 3i is very close to its big brother Nova 3, and it is also quite good in exposure control. In summary, Huawei Nova 3i camera is very good for daylight photos and can produce good quality photos in well-lit conditions but it struggles in low-light conditions.

Xiaomi introduces anti-rollback feature in redmi 6 pro

Xiaomi has announced that it has introduced the anti-rollback feature in their latest MIUI firmware in Redmi 6 Pro. The recent announcement says, In order to maintain the system stability and ensure the security of the equipment, anti-rollback protection has been introduced in the recent Redmi 6 Pro with MIUI developer ROM 8.7.30 and stable ROM V9.6.16. With this announcement, the users of Redmi 6 Pro will not be able to downgrade to the older version of the development and stable ROMs.

If you have previously updated your phone to developer ROM 8.7.30 and above or stable ROM V9.6.16 and above, please do not try to downgrade to the older versions of the ROM. If you do, you will face a hard-brick. There is no any fix to hard-brick caused by anti-rollback feature. You have to go the customer care to repair it.

Let us remind you that Xiaomi had introduced the anti-rollback feature in Redmi Note 5 before introducing it on Redmi 6 Pro. So, Redmi 6 Pro will be another Xiaomi device that will not support roll-back.

In fact, Google built a security feature called Rollback Protection in Android 8.0 Oreo, which prevents the device from rolling back to the older firmware. According to Google, the reason why the “Rollback Protection” function is built in the Android 8.0 Oreo system is mainly due to the comprehensive consideration of the security of user data information. Huawei launches the mid-range Kirin 710 SoC

Huawei has officially launched the new generation mobile SoC Kirin 710, targeting the mid-range mobile phones, directly competing with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710.

However, Kirin 710 still uses the same old TSMC’s 12nm manufacturing technology unlike Snapdragon 710, which uses a more advanced 10nm FinFET manufacturing technology. Therefore, Huawei’s new mobile chipset is relatively inefficient compared to that of the Snapdragon 710, and its performance-to-power ratio is relatively low.

Huawei claims that the performance of the Kirin 710 is 75% higher than that of the Kirin 659, and the multi-core performance is up by 68%. As for the technical specifications, the Kirin 710 is equipped with an 8-core processor, of which four high-performance Cortex-A73 core is clocked at 2.20GHz while four low-performance Cortex-A53 core is clocked at 1.70GHz.

In terms of Graphics, the Kirin 710 is equipped with the ARM Mali-G6 GPU, which is 1.3 times faster than the built-in graphics of Kirin 659 and is more energy efficient. ISP and DSP technologies have also been upgraded, which means that Huawei’s low-end and mid-range phones can have clearer images in low light conditions. In addition, this chipset also features intelligent scene recognition and secure face unlocking, which might be used in software-based artificial intelligence. The Kirin 710 supports dual SIM and dual 4G LTE connectivity with LTE Cat. 12 and 13. Huawei Nova 3i will be the first mobile phone to be equipped with the Kirin 710 processor.

After the launch of the new series of 10nm chips, Huawei had the pressure to update its 16nm Kirin 659 processor. Now, Kirin 710 processor has been released.
